engelbert experience

so i went to engelbert's gig. i invited weed to come with me, i'm glad i did. she knew all of engelbert's. i felt music dumb sitting next to her. :op

engelbert is definitely a brilliant performer. though i'm ignorant, thoroughly enjoyed his stuff.

that's us with engelbert's drummer, a good one at it, a show off as well.

at the foyer, there was a grand piano. we were chatting + of course, i had to tell him that weed is a music genius, who played by ear. you throw any music instrument to her, she'd definitely be able to produce music with it, you let her listen to a song once, she'd be able to play it on piano.

so he asked widie to play a song. he started humming a tune + weed played it on the piano perfectly. he went excited + raved that widie has got good ears. he went, "you should leave the pond + get into the sea, you know what i mean?"

the thing is widie never got into the pond pun. :op

oh! we saw jimmy choo + a malaysian shoe chain owner (forgive my ignorance) + went "jimmy choo! can we take pictures with you please". *eye lashes went battering* come on, who can resist us?

snap!

meet two volunteer gate keepers, who had to crowd control us. yes! we were that ganas, they had to request for back up. what? you donch believe???

grrRRrrRRrrrRRrrrRRrr ... amcam? believe or not?

in case you were wondering how come them gate keepers look familiar? well, apparently they were in explore race 3. remember, "why you so like that ah? why you so like that? why you so like that ah? why you so like that?"

they were almost effective in refraining us from getting the below. :op

have they not learn from Afghan's experience?

Dear friends,

The Internal Security Ministry under the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 recently banned eighteen books published locally and overseas, as they have been deemed able to disrupt peace and harmony. The act prohibits any form of reproduction or distribution of these books, six of which are in Malay and the rest in English.

We would appreciate if you and your organisation/friends/family members/contacts could endorse the joint statement below by 28 June 2006. Please contact : waifong@cijmalaysia.org .The joint statement will be presented to Internal Security Minister and will also be sent to the media by 30 June 2006 .

Your support is most appreciated.

Thank you.

JOINT STATEMENT

We, the undersigned, wish to appeal to the Internal Security Minister to revoke the recent banning of the 18 books and other books previously banned as listed in the attachment. We are particularly concerned at the increasing number of books on Islam and religion that are being banned. A few of the authors, particularly Karen Armstrong and John Esposito, are both highly regarded scholars who are most sympathetic to Islam and Muslims worldwide. Their books are used as reference in courses on Islam in universities in both the East and West.

The ban is part of a worrying regressive trend displayed by those in authority on civil rights issues such as on liberalism and pluralism, Kongsi Raya open house and moral policing.

As concerned citizens, we ask that the Government ensure that a transparent and open process is employed if books are to be banned. There should be opportunity for readers and authors to question the decisions being made and the reasons behind the bans. In this instance, the given reason that these books could 'disrupt peace and harmony' is obviously unjustified, considering that these books have been in circulation for some time.

We are concerned that the space for discourse is narrowing and that Malaysian readers are deprived of ideas and debates by renowned scholars and writers, published by reputable institutions such as the Oxford University Press.

Such censorship on knowledge and ideas contradicts the Government's commitment to place knowledge on a pedestal and as the foundation of civilization, in accordance with the Government's stated policy of Islam Hadhari.

(List of banned books are as attached)

do you believe in black magic?

i don't. to me - the situation of not knowing is real scary, to explain away by blaming it on black magic gives comfort.

i was in a taxi when i overheard a conversation the driver had with a girl; her fiance was having an extra curricular activity with some other girl. i said to myself: you just walk, girl. if he can do it now, what makes you think he can't do it later. from the conversation, i deduced the driver's a bomoh.

he later confirmed my suspicion by professing that he's a bomoh. he sensed my reservations when he was marketing his 'services' + started glancing at me to 'read' me. i panicked then. yup! tho i donch believe in black magic or hocus pocus, i somehow believe in physiognomy, palmistry and graphology. blardyhell you taxi driver!!!

he perfectly described my financials, family, past relationships + traits. the fact that i'm single pun jadi issue, saying many are interested but someone dah tutup my hati via black magic, then suruh me mandi bunga. blah laa! getting the reading right doesn't mean he's a good bomoh, just that he's experienced in face reading. i just smiled politely, when he was telling me his reading. lucky he didn't charge extra for the reading, kalo tak bankrupt oooOOoooOOooo ... once, one taxi driver tried to rip extra RM 50 off me for showing interest in his reading. :op

note to self: start wearing make up + plucking your eyebrows or maybe start wearing a full purdah + them big sunnies!

have a good week, peeps!

p.s. congratulations armi

a nice surprise

this afternoon, my sister's friend since kindergarten waltzed into the office literally, we jerit-ed like two mad women. i haven't seen her for over a year. it was a nice surprise!

meet emylia.

she's just got home from new york for her summer, with a tee from urban outfitters for meself, y'all! donch jeles dzu! got a spesel message on the tee summore for missy suparrrdzu...

'okii oppai', not so much

and a purse ... why is everyone getting me purses lately huh? any subliminal message? my 13 year old boyish black torn + tattered fabric 'wallet' not cool enough? or is it a prayer? ... amin ...

p.s. ita a.k.a bibots, sila jeles ... emylia, merci beaucoup!

untuk perhatian bibots damdumdim (we know you jeles)

emi balik

my brother emi has been away for 30 months, i went to the airport on sunday to pick him up, mama tagged along. i told him i'll have my car parked between "Pintu 5&6" and "Pintu 7" signage. when we reached at the designated area, there were trolleys falling off the pavement onto the road.

mama : diorang ni tak reti tolong betulkan the trolleys ke? lalu lalang macam tak nampak je.
wegra : welcome to malaysia, ma. you want me to teach them how to do it?
mama : pegi la.

*wegra left the drivers seat to push the trolleys off the road + tidily group them*

wegra : ada orang tengok tak?
mama : tak de
wegra : demmit!

emi came + after we've unloaded his stuff, he went to push the trolley into the assigned area. mama + meself went giggling, "orang puteh".

now, meet emi's controversial hair-do. lek laa pak, it's just a hair-do, ada apa dengan rambut?

apart from my sister, emi is the other person i don't mind getting me bhajus bhajus. he's got good taste. i told him i've gone up to a size 12, he saw my blog pictures + assumed that i was exaggerating + got me a size 10 top. ayoh! bye bye cute top. i like you oredi but we don't fit.

choice + consequences

choice entails consequences
for better or worse, each choice is the unavoidable consequence of its predecessor
a good choice yields desirable fruit
a bad choice carries the seed of its own punishment
how do you make a choice?

you made a choice; you sacrificed for the ones you love
warnings were right; your worst fear came true, you suffered the consequences
yet again you are at that very same crossroad
yet again you are required to make a choice
abort for that serenity you’ve almost forgotten or sacrifice for the ones you love
do you still make that same choice?

p.s. chop!!! my "let go, let flow" doesn't apply here. :op

brain fried singing

Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to gray
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee you go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces every time
And I don't need no carryin' on

Because you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Will you need a blue sky holiday?
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on

You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day

(Oooh.. a holiday..)

Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong

(yeah...)

So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

today i learnt: when coping with an illness, people are capable of turning pain to rage, unintentionally hurting the very people trying to help lessen the burden

am totally knackered + brain dead

I felt like throwing up; I desperately need to just swim. Somehow this need reminded me of my university friend, Tabak.

Why the name Tabak? There's an Indian restaurant called Tabak in Rusholme, Manchester. He's like a permanent resident there.

I made that up but really there was a restaurant called Tabak. We used to go there a lot.

Why the name Tabak? Tabak in Arabic means cook. He's a good cook.

He made that up but really he's a brilliant cook. We especially loved his rendang.

Anyways, Tabak was about the only strong swimmer during this one trip. The boys were always protective; he swam with me until we reach a small rock island off the beach, surrounded by beautiful corals and colourful fishes swimming freely. It was breathtaking. I had to ask laa kan, "Do you think there’s sharks here?" Fuiyoh!!! You should see how fast he swam back to the beach. Yeah! Like he left me for the sharks, some friend I have.

I just wondered how he is doing.

P.S. I started this blog because I wanted to write what I want to write. Must it matter if what I write doesn't interest peeps?

should i, should i not, should i, should i not, should i, should i not ... harks!

misyar?? misha omar you mean??

Misyar marriages, a matrimonial pact where the man need not give his wife any material support – like money or clothing – except provide for her sexual needs; a proposal made by an academician to reduce the growing number of UNMARRIED + DIVORCED women in the country as well as OVERCOME INCIDENCES OF VICE among Muslim women.

Like that oso ken izzit?

A kelakar solution kot! Sebab, you wouldn't miss what you don't know. Is the only reason for marriage to have legal sex pun or for us to accumulate responsibilities? We are very material + physical, aren't we? We fail to look beyond. That's the impression I get from reading the abstract paper. They cited the filthy rich Arabs as example. Alahai! That's like comparing a yellow lamborghini with a yellow kelisa. Please laa...

A statement made by a girlfriend on misyar marriage over a meal bugged me til i had nightmares last night. I dreamt of having to help a friend deal with her dysfunctional husband. I donch know why that friend had to be our little Missy Dzu. Oi! In my dream oso you want to enter frame izzit? Oh! I remembered noticing a brochure on a coffee table of another friend's boutique, in the dream. I asked, is this done by the monkey clan? The answer was yes + I was asked how did I know. I said, I recognised their signature. Keh! Keh! Keh! Macam real!!!

I was too stunned to argue yesterday; I stuttered and stammered in shock. The reply to my incoherent protest was we women need to be smart when dealing with men.

Right! I hope it is that simple.

No, I'm not going to spell out why I'm a strong opponent to the proposition. I'll take pages and pages yo! Moreover, it'll be an opinion of someone who's never been married. I don't have the authority to say...

Just that when a bill is passed, it'll affect women from all walks of life. Not just the priviledged + educated who may be well versed with the game. Maybe you feel we don't need protection but how about them innocent simpletons who are vulnerable to abuse. Yes, you have to consciously enter into the agreement. When you're under that spell, you know how it's like.

More, what signals are we sending to the future generation?
